Fungi-Inspired Multidisciplinary Art Projects : Black Void

Black Void’s Biosphere 3 is a multidisciplinary art project that merges speculative science, digital generation, and philosophical inquiry to interrogate humanity’s ambitions for interplanetary colonization. Presented as an immersive installation and short film, the work envisions a future where genetically engineered fungi are tasked with terraforming Mars and they develop autonomous intelligence, which ultimately leads them to assimilate human explorers and sever ties with Earth.
Through parametric modeling, 3D-printed sculptures, and AI-augmented filmmaking, the Black Void collective crafts a narrative that challenges the ethics of biological imperialism, asking whether humanity seeks to discover extraterrestrial life or merely replicate Earth’s dominance in space. The project draws on real astromycology research, such as NASA’s studies on fungal radiation resistance and soil regeneration, but subverts its utilitarian framing by proposing fungi as active agents rather than tools.
