Apple’s WWDC keynote wasn’t particularly thrilling, but the world’s first haptic trailer from the company certainly is. The promotional trailer for the upcoming F1 film featuring Brad Pitt is unique because it allows viewers to literally experience the power of the engines, the rumble of the curbs, and the intensity of every gear shift through vibration motors on the iPhone. To enjoy this haptic trailer on the Apple TV app, users must be running iOS 18.4 or later.
For those unfamiliar, haptic technology on smartphones mimics physical sensations through vibrations. For example, while typing, a haptic motor creates feedback to simulate the feel of a physical keyboard. Haptics also enhance notifications, button presses, gestures, and gaming experiences.
Apple’s haptic system, known as the Taptic Engine, is a specialized haptic feedback mechanism designed to deliver precise and responsive vibrations in Apple devices. Unlike traditional vibration motors, which rely on rotating masses, the Taptic Engine uses a linear actuator, producing more controlled and refined tactile sensations.
Apple released a new F1 trailer that uses the iPhone’s haptic motor for physical feedback – so I turned the volume down and recorded just the vibrations.

While the Taptic Engine has been a core part of iPhones for years, this is the first time Apple is using it to enhance a film trailer. The Taptic Engine syncs with on-screen action, allowing viewers to feel the screeching of tires, engine revs, and even subtle movements like the clicking of a seatbelt or the pressing of buttons—making for an immersive experience that bridges the gap between digital and physical sensations.
Apple TV’s F1 movie is set to hit theaters on June 27. The film stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a veteran driver brought in to mentor Damson Idris, who plays a promising young talent. Together, they attempt to redeem the Formula 1 team that Hayes once drove for.
