Huawei’s next-gen triple folding tipped to debut in September with an upgraded Kirin 9020 chipset

Huawei is reportedly gearing up to launch its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2. The phone is expected to debut in September this year, ahead of the rumoured debut of Samsung’s first triple folding phone. A fresh leak has appeared suggesting that the successor will not bring any major design changes, but it may see some hardware-level changes.

The information comes from the popular tipster Digital Chat Station. According to him, the Mate XT 2 will be powered by the Kirin 9020 SoC. It is also expected to bring satellite connectivity to enhance support in remote areas. In the camera department, the phone could feature a new 50MP main sensor with variable aperture, along with an upgraded periscope telephoto lens for better zoom capabilities.

The Huawei Mate XT 2 is said to continue with the same folding screen setup and battery capacity as its predecessor. That means users can expect a familiar tri-fold design with three display configurations: 10.2-inch fully unfolded, 7.9-inch when folded once, and 6.4-inch when fully folded.

To put things in perspective, the original Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition is equipped with the Kirin 9010 chipset, 16GB RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. It packs a 5,600mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. The camera setup includes a 50MP variable aperture main lens, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP periscope telephoto shooter, while at the front, there’s an 8MP camera for selfies.
