Siri, Apple’s very own virtual assistant, seems to be on a downward spiral. At last year’s WWDC, the tech giant had promised a more personalized Siri; however, it is yet to make its way. During this year’s WWDC, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, had very little to talk about the assistant, although he did state that the update is delayed further. Now, a fresh report suggests that Apple is planning to give up on its own model to partner with ChatGPT or Anthropic. Hopefully, this will fix what’s broken with Siri.
As per Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based tech giant is in talks with OpenAI and Anthropic to use their Large Language Models for Siri. Both these companies have been asked to train versions of their models to function with Apple’s cloud servers for testing purposes. This is an early test, and Apple hasn’t taken a final call on whether or not to ditch Siri. As per the preliminary round of tests, Anthropic’s Claude AI is better suited for Siri. Following this, Apple’s VP of Corporate Development, Adrian Perica, has begun talks with the company to figure out a deal.

The report states that OpenAI had offered to train Apple’s AI model last year. However, the phone maker was convinced that the in-house model was capable enough. Now, when Apple is looking for an alternative, Anthropic is asking for a multi-billion dollar fee that will increase every year. The pricing dispute is the reason why Apple is considering other third-party players such as OpenAI.
Notably, the LLM version of Siri is different from the more personalized Siri and is expected to arrive with iOS 26. Meanwhile, the LLM Siri could debut with iOS 27 in 2026.
