Apple CarPlay will support video playback with iOS 26 when parked

Apple has officially announced that iPhone users will soon be able to stream videos through CarPlay on supported vehicles. The feature will debut with iOS 26, enabling users to project videos from their iPhone onto the car’s center display via AirPlay. However, video playback will only function when the vehicle is stationary. Apple states that the connected iPhone will detect motion, and the video will stop immediately once the car starts moving.

Apple further mentioned that the feature will take time to roll out, as automakers will need to add support for both CarPlay and AirPlay. At this stage, it remains uncertain whether the feature will be available on existing vehicles or if it will be restricted to new models.

Most automakers tend to avoid integrating technology that poses a risk of distracting the driver. Another reason is that car manufacturers are hesitant to relinquish too much control over their infotainment systems to Apple. This explains why only Aston Martin, out of numerous automakers, has publicly expressed support for Apple’s new CarPlay Ultra.

It is worth noting that some electric vehicles already offer video streaming or gaming capabilities when parked. Several Android-based infotainment systems have introduced YouTube and other OTT platforms, allowing users to stream content directly in their cars. Moreover, Tesla features a Theater Mode, which supports Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and other streaming services, enhancing the in-car entertainment experience.
